Your 2-Day Salalah Desert Camping adventure begins at 1:00 PM with a comfortable hotel pickup in Salalah. From there, embark on a scenic drive through the majestic Qarah Mountains, where rugged cliffs and winding roads gradually open up to reveal the vast, golden expanses of the desert.
Your first stop is the historic town of Thumrait, once a bustling Bedouin settlement and an essential caravan stop during Oman’s famous frankincense trade. This town offers a fascinating glimpse into the nomadic culture and desert life that shaped the region for centuries.
Next, explore the legendary Lost City of Ubar, also known as the “Atlantis of the Sands.” This UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site was hidden beneath shifting dunes for centuries and was once a thriving trade center connecting southern Arabia with the wider world. Wander among the ancient ruins and imagine the stories of traders who passed through this desert crossroads.
Arriving at the Empty Quarter about an hour before sunset, get ready for an exhilarating experience of dune bashing with an expert driver. Feel the adrenaline as you navigate the towering sand dunes, try your hand at sand trekking, and climb one of the highest dunes to witness a breathtaking panoramic view of the endless desert.
As the sun dips below the horizon, watch the sky light up with stunning colors, creating a magical moment unique to the Rub’ al Khali desert.
Once darkness falls, settle into your traditional private Bedouin tent at the desert camp, where you will be warmly welcomed with aromatic Arabic coffee. Prepare for a memorable evening with a delicious traditional Omani dinner freshly prepared in the camp kitchen.
After dinner, gather around the campfire to share stories, listen to your guide’s tales about Oman’s rich culture and desert traditions, and enjoy the peaceful desert silence.
As the camp lights dim, look up to be amazed by one of the clearest, most dazzling night skies in the world — perfect for stargazing and soaking in the vastness of the desert under a shimmering canopy of stars.
